Sonya Savors the Sail by Lauren Yorks
When the spectacle of the thrill wears off may you be prepared to treasure the beauty in the mundane.

Sonya was the most boring person she herself could find. Being the cashier at a super store? Literally different with each passing customer but figuratively the same. Scan price bag, scan price bag. Her roommate Macy needed her rent share soon, or she’ll risk another eviction request. One day at work she simply meant to sigh, not to let a tear flow. "That's it” she thought. Once you're crying bored, you've hit the well, you're not too far off from the pit.

After hiding more tears during her shift, Sonya called her older brother, Tristin, the professional thrill seeker. Naturally, he had just what she needed on standby; parasailing. "Yes!" Sonya exclaimed, "I've always been curious about parasailing, let's do it!”

Soon they were exiting off the Miami highway, and the beach could be seen from the distance. Sonya practically bounced in her seat. 'All my stress could blow away right here. I hope at least,’ she happily muttered, causing her brother to chuckle. Once they prepare the boat, Sonya had to be held back gently as Tristin secured the parasail. With an eager thumbs up, Sonya jumped and off they flew.

While Tristin was at the wheel, Sonya felt the thrills she seemed to need. The height she thought she'd fear until now made her feel like she'd dropped an her burdens. Work and loneliness seemed to fall into the ocean. Gravity who? What heavy conflicts on my mind? Oh, the excitement, the view of that Florida ocean to the shore. It was topped off by a curious seagull who joined her on her flight.
The bird cawed and sang as he flew past Sonya. She thought one bird was delightful . A second one? Nice, the first one has a friend. The fifteen cawing and swarming behind her all at once? How hectic things get in a moment's notice.

Suddenly, Sonya's senses were heightened. Tristin had sped up, lowering her down upon spotting the seagulls. The force amplified the wind, pounding it into her lungs. She would've panted if it would've made feel better but it didn't. Her heart reminded her of earthquakes. No, something faster, like the beating of a hummingbird's wings.

That was ironically her ticket.

She was back on the ground. Specifically in the greenhouse of her super store. There's the hummingbird ,sipping from the red tulips, and hoping he goes unbothered. Sensing the wonder in Sonya's eyes, he dances to sprint away.
Descending back to the boat, it all clicked. Sonya needed to bring beauty into her life, not wait for it. She smiled as her brother unbuckled her and embraced her tightly.

“ Are you okay?” Tristin asked.

“Yeah,” nodded Sonya.

"I panicked when I saw the seagulls," added Tristin. "You must've been scared."

“I…. saw a dolphin," she smiled. Looking out, they watched the dolphin flip around for air. She eeks and savors every jump. Sonya tied her hair back, dove into the water. When she resurfaced, she swam with the dolphins, and was happier than she could be.
